SA JEAN-PHILIPPE MARCHAND : A historic 18th century winery in the heart of the famous Gevrey-Chambertin hamlet by Business News Japan

On February 24th, 1813, the Maison Marchand was founded in Morey-Saint-Denis. Pierre Marchand, a local winemaker from Reulle-Vergy in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, married Marie Jacotier, the heiress of her father’s wine estate, on that day.

Since then, the domain has grown through seven generations in Morey-Saint-Denis: Pierre, François, François-Joseph, Emile, and Claude.

Claude bought a historic 18th century winery in the heart of the famous Gevrey-Chambertin hamlet in 1983. The estate was later passed down to his oldest son, Jean-Philippe.

The Domaine’s vineyards are primarily located in the Cotes de Nuits, namely in the villages of Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Gevrey-Chambertin.

The domain owns multiple pieces of land with Premiers crus vineyards: « Les Sentiers » in Chambolle Musigny, « Clos des Ormes » in Morey-Saint-Denis, and « Les Combottes » in Gevrey-Chambertin, as is typical of Burgundy parceling. Clos de la Roche, Griottes-Chambertin, and Charmes-Chambertin are the Grand Crus.

The majority of the domain’s wines are labeled “Vieilles Vignes” since the vines are between 40 and 50 years old. Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is made from of vines that are over 60 years old.

In order to control the soil quality, the health of the vine stock, vegetal development, and grape yield, the vineyards are plowed and fertilized with organic fertilizer.

The concept of Jean-Philippe Marchand is to maintain the authenticity of each terroir so that it can develop and reflect its true personality. Hand-harvested grapes are then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats before being aged in oak barrels.

Very recently, SA Jean-Phillippe Marchand has joined JAPAN Wines, Spirits and Beers Competition and won two gold medals in this competition. Here are the list of wines that won in this competition:
