Weingut Umathum GmbH : Authentic Red Wines made from the Traditional Local Varieties

Weingut Umathum GmbH - Business News Japan

Weingut Umathum GmbH is best known for the authentic red wines produced from the traditional local Blaufränkisch, Sankt Laurent and Zweigelt varieties.

Fascinating white wines such as the Pinot gris, the Yellow & Red Traminer and a very rare Rosé Saignée, which made wine history, are also being pressed by Josef Umathum.

The revival in Burgenland of the historic grape variety Lindenblättriger also goes back to Umathum.

The original of the red wine cuvée ‘Haideboden’ was pressed in 1991. The Kirschgarten, Vom Stein and Ried Hallebühl have the best local wines.

It processes only hand-picked grapes and the aging takes place in traditional wooden barrels.

The consistency of the signature wines is based on lively soil and lively plants. All of the works adopt nature’s rhythms. The vines are only picked from the very oldest vineyards in order to maintain the memory of the plants.

The winery works in manageable structures, according to biological guidelines, which are based on the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner.

The aim is to bring ripe and healthy grapes intact into the cellar, so there are only hand-picked grapes. The cellar work is gentle and the aging takes place mainly in wooden barrels.

The high-quality single-site wines are only sold after more than three years of storage at the winery.

Start-up assistance is also offered with unusual promotional campaigns for young talents from the agricultural sector. All those who have received funding so far, such as the vegetable producer Erich Stekovics or the winemaker Uwe Schiefer, were still unknown at the time and are now firmly established in their field. (See also under  Rethinking).

The History

THE NAME UMATHUM ORIGINATES FROM THE BAVARIAN-FRENCH AND ORIGINALLY IS INTERPRETED AS “AROUND THE DOM”.

The ancestors of the Umathum settled down on Lake Neusiedl at the time of Maria Theresa. Since then, winemaking has played a major role in the life of the family. Until the 1980s, the farm was managed as a mixed farm. Viticulture today is the absolute subject of the life of the family – Josef Umathum, born in 1960, has been responsible since 1985 for the house’s world-renowned wines.
