KIES FAMILY WINES: The Ties That Bind

History

Tina and Michael with the rest of their team that was family members opened the cellar door in 1985. Before opening the vineyards, Michael was already a permanent fixture at the vineyards. He was into real estate and public speaking but ever since he was just a small boy, he already started working at the vineyard. His passion was so strong that many believed he had them named individually.

Tina meanwhile is the force that propelled the Kies Family Wines into a household name and opening wider doors to their customers. The little cottage was subsequently renovated, with the help of family and opened in January 1985. The day of the opening was stinking hot (40°c) and there was no air–conditioning; to top it all off Tina was pregnant and nearly due with Bronson, her eldest son…” From 1985 the Kies Family Wines philosophy was “not to get bigger just get better”.

Their focus has always been on “quality not quantity”. This is why they keep their wine production small so as to keep the quality and its distinctive varietal characters.

Monkey Nut Cafe

The Monkey Nut Cafe is a great accompaniment to the Kies Family Wines Cellar Door, serving platters and light snacks to compliment the diverse range of wines on offer. The cafe is nestled amongst the Kies vineyard and boasts some of the most incredible views of the Lyndoch Ranges.

Of particular note is the view of the ‘Monkey Nut Tree’, visible from the Dedication Room, which gave the name to their award-winning Monkey Nut Tree Merlot. The Monkey Nut Tree is a pine nut tree which marks the highest point on the Barossa Ranges.
