Skoff Original Winery: We live for wine
“Wine is life. Our life is wine.” These sentences reflect the commitment of the Skoff family. A passion for viticulture and the striving for perfection combine with a fine feel for nature on Gamlitz Eckberg in idyllic Southern Styria. The result is wines with personality and of international calibre.
Gamlitz, 2019
Walter Skoff is without a doubt one of the greats of the Austrian white wine scene. Along with his wife Eva Liebau, a renowned soprano who performs in opera houses around the world, he runs SKOFF ORIGINAL Winery on Gamlitz Eckberg in Southern Styria. Their two young sons Walter-Martin and Franz-Josef are ready and waiting to steer the course of the successful company in the future.
Winemaking to the rhythm of nature
The grand seigneur of wine understands his craft. His passion for winemaking motivates him day after day—whether he is laying out a new vineyard with precision and love or coordinating work in the vineyards to the exact rhythm of nature. In addition to his feel for the soil and climate and his incredible expertise, he has his team to support him: employees of many years who have wine in their blood just as much as their boss does.
Traditional ways that are tried and tested as well as innovative approaches from granite tanks to organic vinification are pursued. World Champion 2017 SKOFF ORIGINAL Winery continually creates Styrian wines that please the palate and are a hit in international circles. Its masterpieces have received numerous awards over the past 30 years. A
recent highlight in medals that have been received was the 2017 Concours Mondial du Sauvignon Blanc in Bordeaux, one of the most important white wine competitions in the world.
From among a field of 867 international wines, Walter Skoff’s Sauvignon Blanc Kranachberg (vintage 2015) was selected to receive the Denis Dubourdieu Trophy. This is awarded to the wine with the purest and most refined Sauvignon character and is the equivalent of being the world champion.lent of being the world champion.
A passion for Sauvignon Blanc
Walter Skoff’s love of winemaking is ubiquitous and has turned into a passion concerning one type of wine in particular: He is enamoured with Sauvignon Blanc. It is not without reason that experts respectfully refer to him as Mr. Sauvignon. With fine feeling and in perfect harmony with nature, the winemaker manages to bring out the seemingly infinite facets of this type of wine like no one else does—without interfering with the authenticity of the grape variety. He draws on plentiful resources. His thirteen vineyards include famous names such as Grassnitzberg, Kranachberg, Obegg and Hochsulz. Each has its own unique style—a paradise of flavours.
It’s all about location
Walter Skoff is the fourth generation to run the family winery, where around 60 hectares are under cultivation. The mild climate, many hours of sunshine and fertile soils of Southern Styria provide the perfect conditions for top quality wines. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand and then processed carefully with great expertise. That’s the recipe for developing fine wines that delight wine lovers around the world and enrich the world of international gastronomy.
