Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo is a well-known winery with a century of experience. It is a family-run estate and one of the Langhe’s largest privately owned estates. The estate covers 53 hectares and produces eight Barolo crus (the greatest Barolo assortment on the market), including the well-known Monprivato. The company’s headquarters are in Castiglione Falletto, which is flanked by some of the company’s vineyards.
Giorgio is the third generation owner, and he manages the vines directly, while the wines are always prepared under the supervision of Armando Cordero, a well-known oenologist who worked at Sordo until his death a few years ago. Mr. Cordero’s protocol is still followed by the new winemaker today. He collaborates with Giorgio, who is also involved in the winemaking process.
Agricola Azienda Giovanni Sordo is a purist who focuses on making exceptionally exquisite Barolo matured in large Slavonian botti. His distinctiveness lies in his ability to make wines with the same winemaking approach across varied geographical ranges, conveying what the Langhe zone’s delicate heart has to give. Sordo’s use of green manure demonstrates his deep respect for the soil. Sordo’s use of green manure demonstrates his deep respect for the soil.
The estate’s output is diverse. Langhe Bianco (a combination of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Viognier), Langhe Chardonnay, Langhe Sauvignon, and Langhe Bianco Viognier in ‘purezza’ are among the white wines covered (a very tiny production). Roero Arneis Wine, a local variety, is praised alongside Alta Langa DOCG, a sparkling wine made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay aged on the lees for 36 months. The majority of the production is focused on red wines. Dolcetto, Barbera, Langhe Rosso, and Verduno Pelaverga (a wine created from a native grape called Pelaverga Piccolo) are bright and vivacious, while Nebbiolo d’Alba and Barbaresco are more structured.
Very recently, Sordo Giovanni Azienda Agricola has joined JAPAN Wines, Spirits and Beers Competition and won gold medal award in this prestigious competition: This prize underlines the company’s remarkable national and international position and efforts.
