Château de Belcier is situated on a terroir with a long history, which is an extension of Saint Emilion: Côtes de Castillon, one of Bordeaux’s oldest wine regions. The 67 hectares are mainly Merlot (Saint Emilion’s king), but there is also Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. Michel Rolland, the world’s most prominent oenologist, advised them.
The late-eighteenth-century Château de Belcier, once owned by a Bordeaux family linked to Montaigne, was restored in part by François de Belcier, the revolutionary guillotined in 1794.
The Château de Belcier, which dates from the 1780s and is distinguished by triangular pediments, dominates the harmonious landscapes of Salles de Castillon, which alternate woods and vineyards. The castle, which is now owned by the mutual insurance firm MACIF, has regained much of its former glory.
If you want to sample the wines of Belcier Castle when they are still young, you must decant them three or four hours before the tasting. They are at their peak between the fourth and eighth years of life and can be held for ten years.
On a clay-limestone and silty clay soil, the 52-hectare vineyard is planted primarily with Merlot, the grape of choice in neighboring Saint-Emilion, but with a smaller proportion of Cabernet and Malbec.
Fermentation takes about 12 days, followed by 10 to 12 days of maceration at 28 degrees, depending on the vintage. Oak barrels are used to age the wine. The Château de Belcier also produces the Château de Monrecueil, also known as the B of Belcier, and the Pin de Belcier, a great wine. A very large cuvée is also produced by Château de Belcier in very small amounts (5000 bottles).

Le Coq de Ramage is a delicious Bordeaux Supérieur. There is a firm emphasis on fruit here. The wine is not aged in barrels and is immensely palatable, fleshy and well balanced, with an elegant label. Tasting notes – 2016 vintage Intense ruby crimson colour, lots of fruit on the nose with floral touches, well-rounded and mellow in the mouth – aromatic and greedy with smooth tannins and great freshness. Easy to drink, a lovely wine.

The 52 hectares of vineyard lie on clay and limestone and clay and silt soil. A majority of that land grows Merlot – the
preferred Saint Emilion grape variety – and the rest of the land grows a lesser proportion of Cabernet and Malbec.
The fermentation takes 12 days, with maceration at 28°C for 10 to 12 days according to the vintage. The wine is aged in oak barrels. The Château de Belcier produces second wines – the Château de Monrecueil, B de Belcier and the Armoiries de Belcier – as well as a Bordeaux Supérieur, a rosé – the Fleurs de Belcier – and a Special Reserve – the Pin de Belcier. Belcier wines win medals and awards and are mentioned in the best wines guides on a regular basis.
